§ 14-111. Definitions.

  • For the purpose of this article, the following words and phrases shall have the meanings, respectively, ascribed to them by this section:

    Massage means and includes any process consisting in kneading, rubbing or otherwise manipulating the skin or any part of the body of a human being, either with the hands or by means of electrical instruments or apparatus, or other special apparatus, but shall not include massage by duly licensed physicians, registered physical therapists, or massage of the face, head or shoulders by duly licensed beauty parlors or barbershops.

    Massage establishment means any building, room, place or establishment, other than regularly licensed hospitals, where manipulated massage or manipulated exercises are practice upon the human body by anyone who is not a duly licensed physician, whether with or without use of mechanical, therapeutic or bathing devices, and shall include Turkish bathhouses; provided, however, this phrase shall not include beauty parlors and barbershops duly licensed under the laws of the state, or offices, clinics and establishments of duly licensed physicians, whether doctors of medicine, osteopathy, chiropractors, or of registered physical therapists who treat only patients referred by physician's direction, or the place of work or employment of an athletic trainer who treats only athletes engaged in sports under the supervision or sponsorship of the institution, agency, or corporation or person by whom such trainer is employed.

    State registered massage therapist means a person who has passed the requirements required by the state and is so registered within the state to perform massage.
